Why a site on Echinomastus?

The answer is pretty simple: because Echinomastus are fantastic plants bearing spines and flowers or rare beauty. I was fascinated by these plants since the very beginning of my experience with growing cactus, and I am still enchanted by their charm after about 20 years.

In addition we seldom hear or read about Echinomastus, perhaps because of their well deserved reputation of being hard to grow.

Indeed they often leave us withouth any apparent reason and are so water sensitive that after each rare watering I hold my breath, hanging around with the worst expectactions.

Despite all difficulties, I have been enjoying their company over my terrace for over 10 years now and I must say they are kind of rewarding plants.

Seing the first flowers of a seed grown Echinomastus intertextus was perhaps the most exciting event in my experience with plants.

As I almost never found other people that grow these plants, I was quite happy when I met a few Echinomastuts growers on the forum on cactus and succulents of the Italian association Cactus&Co last year. It was kind of a surprise! I got to know of other plants over other terraces, other people struggling with these plants and eager to share their thoughts.

And this is actually where this site starts, with the outcomes of all these discussions which we tried to summarize in a few articles.

We hope that sharing these experiences can be of interest to those already interested in Echinomastus as well as be a reference to those willing to start growing them.

Hopefully we can also count on the contribution of all visitors that are willing to share their pictures and their experience: as that of Elton Roberts, who sent us a couple of articles on cultivation, together with the photos of his beautiful plants; and that of Peter Breslin, who allowed us to use the pictures he took in habitat, during his adventures in search of Echinomastus erectocentrus and Echinomastus Johnsonii across the Arizona deserts....

What else to say?  Good growing!
